Road Safety

in General Chat

I received this e-mail today. I can't go because I will be timekeeping that evening. Anyone interested in going?

Dear Cycle Clubs

You are invited to a cycle club road safety evening.

Via East Midlands in partnership with Nottinghamshire County Council’s Safer Highways Team would like to invite members of Nottinghamshire’s cycle clubs to a meeting on 24th April 2018 starting at 7.30pm, at Newark Fire Station.

Via’s Safer Highways team are very pro-active in reducing the number of people injured on our network. As part of this commitment we would like to work with you to help us reduce cycling injuries across Nottinghamshire. The aim of this evening is to discuss ways in which cycle clubs can continue to help us improve road safety.

With cycling becoming ever more popular and many initiatives to promote cycling, our aim is to encourage safer cycling techniques. As part of this ongoing commitment we are interested in talking to people who are involved with cycle clubs and regular group rides.

Refreshments will be available at the meeting and we aim to be finished by 9pm.

Please let us know how many of your cycle club will be able to attend by 16th April 2018.

UNFORTUNATELY it clashes with a few days I am away otherwise I would have gone.

They will not sort much in 90 mins what they need are regular meetings and actually do something ......-----wing nut

I fear this might turn out to be lecturing cyclists to wear helmets, High Viz and to obey the Highway Code. The real issues are close overtakes, pot holes, inadequate cycle paths (entrances, sweeping, ice, parking), aggressive drivers, drink and drug influence, traffic lights that don't work for cyclists etc.

Well said Ed. I share your concern. What a shame it's on a Tuesday.

Interesting job title - " Road Safety Officer - School Liaison"

I dare say those that do attend will be talked down to.

I'd love to know who funds the Highways Safety Team - probably our friends over at Highways England. They seem to have a vested interest in driving cyclists off the roads. The seemingly quasi-private company that is classed as a government owned company (after being converted from an executive agency in recent years) which is awarded contracts by the government and was worth nearly £111 billion on 31st March 2017 and the Secretary of State for Transport holds 75% of the equity shares. I wonder if Mr. Grayling can vote himself a share dividend.

You'd think with that kind of money in reserve they would be able to repair a few potholes!!!

I would like to attend, if it is not too late. I have been known to have a view on potholes and driver behaviour.
